Wild Columbines

Bunches of wild columbine flowers bloom on the side of Piney River Road north of Vail this month. Columbines, the Colorado state flower, are among the many wildflowers that thrive in the state’s higher elevations during the summer.

The 10th Mountain Division Memorial stands on display near Meadow Drive in Vail this past week. The regiment, which fought during World War II in Italy and trained for war in Colorado, had 992 killed in action and 4,154 wounded in action during the war. It is still active today as a light infantry division of the Army.

Tourists and locals create a bevy of activity in front of the Solaris Residences on East Meadow Drive in Vail this month. The area is active nightly during the summer and is especially busy each Sunday when Vail Farmer’s Market and Art Show has dozens of vendors on display. The turf-covered area becomes an ice skating rink during the winter.

Night descends on the fountain at Bridge Street and Hanson Ranch Road in Vail this month. Vail’s downtown offers a view of old-school German architecture with offerings of modern nightlife and music.

A bunch of alpine forget-me-nots bloom on the south end of the Betty Ford Alpine Gardens. The venue, which is the world’s highest-elevated botanical garden, was named after the former first lady. The adjacent symphony amphitheater, the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater, is named for her husband, the 38th president of the United States.
