AURORA | With winter break in its wake, the winter prep sports season resumes and is ready to go full steam ahead towards championships beginning next month.
Boys and girls basketball, boys and girls wrestling, girls swimming and ice hockey took breaks from competition or practice Dec. 24-27 and Jan. 1, but restart both activities Monday, which features only one contest with the Rangeview boys basketball team playing a visit to Columbine at 7 p.m.
The first week of competition features some significant competition in a variety of sports, including the opening of the always entertaining Centennial League boys and girls basketball season. Wednesday’s first day has a number of outstanding matchups highlighted by the Grandview vs. Mullen girls and Eaglecrest vs. Smoky Hill boys.
Strong matchups in girls swimming (Cherokee Trail vs. Cherry Creek Tuesday), boys wrestling (Eaglecrest vs. Cherokee Trail Thursday), girls wrestling (a triangular hosted by Vista PEAK Thursday) and ice hockey (Cherry Creek and Regis Jesuit play back-to-back Friday at Family Sports Center) are among the standouts of the week.
