Should you arrive in Leadville two weeks early or 48 hours before?

Short answer: experienced Leadville athletes cluster around two strategies. Arrive two or more weeks early and genuinely adapt, or arrive inside about 48 hours and race before the deepest fatigue of early acclimatization settles in. The widely repeated mistake is the middle: arriving four to seven days out, deep in the adaptation trough, with blood chemistry in flux, sleep degraded, and no adaptation benefit yet banked. Both viable strategies work; the halfway version reliably underperforms.

What altitude does to a race effort

At Leadville's 10,152 ft, and higher on the courses, the air holds roughly 30 percent less oxygen than at sea level. For a sustained endurance effort that shows up as a meaningful cut in aerobic capacity, faster drift into higher heart rates at a given pace, harder breathing, and, for many people, degraded sleep and appetite in the first days, exactly the systems a hundred-mile effort leans on. Full adaptation, more red cells and better oxygen handling, takes weeks, not days.

Strategy one: arrive two-plus weeks early

This is the gold standard when life allows it. The first several days feel bad, then the body gets to work, and by two to three weeks most athletes have recovered decent sleep, appetite and training quality at elevation. The practical obstacles are obvious: few people can relocate for two or more weeks, training quality dips during the transition, and lodging costs stack up. Athletes who do it often stage it: a first block somewhere moderate like Frisco or Buena Vista, then Leadville itself as the race approaches. If you can only manage ten days, most of the benefit is still there; the curve bends fastest in the first two weeks.

Strategy two: arrive inside 48 hours

The counterintuitive alternative: sleep low as long as possible and show up just before the gun. The logic is that the worst systemic fatigue of early acclimatization tends to build over the first days at elevation, so racing within the first 24 to 48 hours means competing before that trough fully arrives. You still race with the immediate oxygen penalty, your pace targets must respect that, but you avoid stacking days of poor sleep and adaptation stress on top of it. This strategy pairs naturally with sleeping in Buena Vista or Salida (2,000 to 3,000 ft lower) and driving up, and it is the realistic option for working athletes flying in from sea level.

Why the middle fails

Days three through seven at altitude are, for many people, the worst window: sleep is at its most fragmented, fluid shifts and elevated resting heart rate are in full swing, and none of the durable adaptations have arrived. Racing a hundred miles from inside that window means paying altitude's full price plus an acclimatization surcharge. If your schedule only allows five days, most experienced voices in this space would tell you to either compress to two days or find two more weeks, and if neither is possible, to adjust your goal accordingly rather than pretend the window doesn't matter.

Things that help under either strategy

The basics from the altitude guide apply doubled for racers: aggressive hydration, no alcohol, scheduled carbohydrate intake even without appetite, and easy movement rather than hard workouts in the first days up high. Whatever strategy you pick, decide your pacing plan for the thin air in advance; the field that blows up on the first climb every year is made of people who raced their sea-level watch.
